SUMMARY : Marie Chapdelaine, a young woman from the provinces of Chibougamau, leaves her mother to go to Montreal in search of Tancrède, her father, whom she never knew. There, she meets Armand Saint-Amour—a former lumberjack turned country bar owner who knew her father—François Paradis and Charlotte Juillet, a journalist and writer respectively, as well as Blanche Bellefeuille, who was her father's mistress. Marie plans to visit the last lumber camp where Tancrède worked. But, exploited by both Saint-Amour and Paradis, Marie will have to make the best of a bad situation...
ABOUT THE FILM : The first Quebec film to truly be exported abroad, La Mort d'un bûcheron is a Canadian dramedy starring Carole Laure (Preparez vos mouchoirs) in her first major role. Director Gille Carle (L'Ange et la femme, Fantastica) was very freely inspired for this occasion by a great success of French-language literature: Maria Chapdelaine by Louis Hémon (1913). This classic of Quebec cinema, a fierce critique of capitalism and human selfishness, is presented for the first time in the world in high definition.
