SUMMARY : England, 19th century.
Using an experimental camera, scientist Sir Hugo Cunningham (Robert Stephens - The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes) discovers a supernatural entity called Asphyx, who appears at the moment of death to capture the soul. With the help of his adopted son Giles (Robert Powell - The Gold Runs Out), he conducts further experiments and devises a way to harness Asphyx and thus achieve immortality. But, as any visionary scientist should know, defying natural and spiritual laws leads to terrible consequences...
ABOUT THE FILM : Lavishly shot by the legendary Freddie Young (Lawrence of Arabia), this unique work by Peter Newbrook (cinematographer of Carnage) becomes one of British cinema's most unusual and captivating supernatural films.
This edition also contains the French short version of the film (on VHS Vision) with some dialogue removed, as well as the 99-minute extended version. This reconstruction of the extended version mixes HD footage obtained from the 35mm negative with SD footage obtained from a (lower-quality) American release print. Consequently, significant changes in image quality will occur.
BONUS :
• The Story of the Spirit of Death by Nicolas Stanzick (39')
• The Spirit of Death in VHS Vision (French version of the film) (1h26)
• Movie trailers
