SUMMARY : 1920: A small town in West Virginia, Matewan is completely controlled by the mining company, which owns the land, homes, and businesses, and uses its workforce by force. The miners decide to strike against their inhumane living conditions, but they are quickly opposed by an armed militia that will reign terror.
ABOUT THE FILM : Based on true events and produced independently in 1987, at the height of ultra-liberal Reaganism, MATEWAN is both a scathing critique of the founding of the United States and a sincere, humane plea for a better way of living together. Halfway between The Grapes of Wrath and Heaven's Gate, the film by John Sayles (Lone Star, City of Hope) features a top-flight cast (Chris Cooper, David Strathairn, James Earl Jones, Mary McDonnell, Will Oldham) enhanced by Haskell Wexler's marvelous, Oscar-nominated cinematography...
Completely unavailable in France for over 30 years, the film is presented on Blu-Ray in its latest 4K restoration.
