SUMMARY : In 1694, in England, Virginia Herbert asks Neville, a young and renowned painter and landscaper, to create twelve drawings related to the estate of her husband, a wealthy landowner. In return, she agrees to pay him in gold... and in kind! With her husband away, Neville accepts the deal. But he soon realizes that he has been used for an entirely different purpose...
ABOUT THE FILM : At the beginning of his career, Peter Greenaway (The Belly of an Architect, The Pillow Book) created a remarkable work with Murder in an English Garden, steeped in an atmosphere of murder and machinations. Carried by a score by the talented Michael Nyman (The Piano), the film boasts established actors in its cast, including Anthony Higgins (A Mass for Dracula), Janet Suzman (A Dry White Season) and Anne-Louise Lambert (Picnic at Hanging Rock). Finally, benefiting from superb cinematography influenced by Flemish Baroque painting, Murder in an English Garden is a whodunit brilliantly transposed into the Renaissance.
