SUMMARY : 1970s - In the poor neighborhoods of Salvador, on the heights of Bahia, lives a community made up of colorful and warm characters. Their names are Coq Fou, Ygrec, Massu, Rosa Moustache… and Otalia. The latter, a prostitute in the service of Dona Tiberia, is in love with Corporal Martim. This band of merry fellows shares a common passion for music, dance, and love. But their poverty also regularly brings them into conflict with the police.
ABOUT THE FILM : After Black Orpheus (Palme d'Or at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival), director Marcel Camus (The Atlantic Wall) returns to his first love, Brazil, with Otalia of Bahia. An adaptation of Jorge Amado's novel The Night Shepherds, Otalia of Bahia is a hymn to love and freedom, where the heroes are the inhabitants of the favelas. Released in the VHS era, this film had since fallen into oblivion. Otalia of Bahia, which is making its worldwide Blu-ray release, is finally available in high definition.
